How Kansas Got Its Shape

 How Kansas Got Its Shape
By Julia V.

Well Howdy! Listen as I tell you about the bee-a-utiful state of Kansas. As y'all know, Kansas is almost a perfect rectangle, but it's got an odd corner. Well, that all started with a simple land dispute.

Now Kansas was once a beautiful rectangle like Colorado and Wyoming. But Mr. McLandersburg loved to steal land, of course. Mr. Jack Potter lived in the top right corner of Kansas, and Mr. McLandersburg lived in Missouri. McLandersburg, true to his name, wanted that land.

They each began to devise their own master plan. Mr. Potter was a very poor man, but he spent all his money and built a large, protective wall. Mr. McLandersburg was very very rich, and he bought very, VERY expensive cannons! But as the battle raged on, they each saw a new light.

                                             2 weeks later...

Jack Potter signed the agreement to make his property part of Missouri. And that, my friends, is how Kansas got its shape.

Now that is why. You know, the land is still the Potters', but in Missouri. And again, that is how Kansas got its shape.

How The Dogs Got Out

   How The Dogs Got Out

You may know the saying, " who let the dogs out." Well here's exactly where the saying came from.

One day, a long time ago, there was a dog named Fluffy.  She would act perfect around her owner, Bob, but what Bob didn't know was that Fluffy was very sneaky!  So when Bob went to work, he left the door open, like he always does, and Fluffy went for a walk, and thought what a mess she could make by letting all the dogs out of their houses!  So then Fluffy decided to do exactly that.  She went to the Johnson's house, the Louis house, and many other houses, and let every single dog out!

When Bob got home, the whole neighborhood was a mess! All the dogs in the neighborhood were going crazy! Then Bob said" Hey! Who let the dogs out?" And since then, no one has figured out( except us ) who... Let the dogs out.

Perusasive writing

Dear Mr. Conti,

" I don't like indoor recess, there's nothing to do!" Is a complaint that you can hear at any school. We can change this by having indoor recess in the gym. Facts from experienced people are soon to be said.

First of all, pupils want a change of scenery once in a while. Pupils also need space to run around if they're not outside. At indoor recess they don't have the chance to run around. With that being said lets talk about Health matters.

If they have recess in the gym for exercise they will have a lower risk of getting the following:
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Arthritis
  • Etc.
These are common sicknesses that you will find in older people, usually because they didn't get enough exercise as a kid. Of course you might think this is all wrong but, if you ask a local doctor this, he/she would say this was all true. These facts are said to be true by my doctor,Yavashian. Now let's talk about exercise matters.

If kids don't have enough exercise they can get the sicknesses that are above. They will also get tightness in their joints. Even if students have recess in the gym once a week, that will most likely be enough to get through the week because they can still get exercise at home. If kids had recess in the gym, there would be lower obesity.

Consider this letter an answer to all questions to lower obesity. Most kids will be happier in the gym for indoor recess. Consider this letter.

    Sincerely
         Jada McNair

Personal narrative

There I was, standing at the starting line, regretting my decision. Earlier that morning I was getting ready to run the 5K. At first, I thought running it sounded easy, until I stood there about to run it.
I was just standing there, waiting and waiting and waiting, when finally the man said "GO!". At last, I started zooming in front of everyone, until I got so tired that I stopped. I didn't pace myself at first. And then, Adrian(my friend) caught up to me and told me to jog for the beginning of the race. It seemed like a  kazillion years before I got to the 1 mile mark. Yes, there was water. By the time I got to the water station, my legs were throbbing. Already I could tell that that day was going to be a long day.  As I was making my way to the 2 mile mark, I kept stopping then walking then sprinting in that exact order.
At that moment I was feeling really bad so I stopped and started walking. Unicorns were buzzing inside my head telling me to keep going. To keep myself running, I said to myself "pretend that I'm on a mystical unicorn running from an evil chicken." It actually worked because before I knew it I was at the 2 and a half mile mark. I was almost there I could hear everyone cheering for the racers. But as I was making my way to the finish line, I stopped. I didn't know what got into me but I just had to stop.
When I looked up I saw a bunch of people passing me drinking water, that's it I hadn't had a drink of water since the last water stop. Oh well, I just had to keep going. I was only .09 miles away, I could make it. I started jogging and then before I knew it I was sprinting. I ran past at least ten people. All of a sudden everything slowed down. I thought that I was going to pass out, so I decided to sprint full speed before I did. It was a lot of work. As I got closer to the finish line, the cheers were becoming louder. As I crossed the finish line, a strong gust of wind hit my face, I didn't care because I did it I completed my first 5K.

Fifa 15 Game Review

FIFA 15 Ultimate Team (a.k.a FUT 15) is already one of the most popular video games in the world. The EA Sports game has over 12 million gamers and can be played on Android, iOS, Xbox, PS4, etc. In FUT 15 you can manage and play as a real club or make your own dream squad. The game soundtrack is filled with songs. You can use coins to buy players in transfer markets or packs. The commentary is very interesting. The controls are can be programmed easy for beginners and more complicated for more advanced players. FUT 15 allows you to form a team of stars from all professional leagues. With great graphics, a complete lineup of teams, the game allows you test your skills against the best. Despite being wi-fi dependent, FIFA 15 Ultimate Team is game I suggest for all ages.

The Target Rush
By: Rushil

blackfriday13.jpg”Wow, look at that line!” I said to my Dad. When me and my Dad entered Target, we observed this humongous line that looked like a snake. They were all here for electronics! Unfortunately, we had to be in that line, the first thought that came into my mind was “I am never going to get my Ipod Touch 5.” The further we budged, the less hope and the more bored I got. I waited in line and looked around for a favorable enough place to sit down and rest my feet. Sadly, there were no seats available.

After standing in line for 3 and ½  hours of complaining to my Dad and being bored, we finally came by the aisle that had the xbox One connected. I told my Dad to wait in line while I played Forza Horizon 2 on the xbox one. I rushed to the xbox before anyone has the chance to steal it from me. I grabbed the controller and started playing, trying not to think about the amount of time I had left to play.

People rushed to buy the games on their sons and daughters lists. I got jostled and pushed from every side! I lost my focus as I got bumped into, and the other driver in second place passes me just before I pass the finish line. Suddenly, my head started to hurt and I felt hungry. I turned the game off and went back to my Dad.

“Dad, I’m hungry,” I whined. “Here, eat these,” my Dad said as he handed me a Starburst pack that he brought from home. I gave my Dad a few pieces and I ate the rest. The funny part was, we ate the whole pack and we were still stuck in line! After another 20 minutes of waiting and being bored, it was finally our turn.

I was so happy there still was an Ipod Touch 5 Space Gray 32gb left in stock. The anticipation of waiting till Christmas to open it was killing me! On Christmas morning, I found my Ipod Touch and ripped open the wrapping paper. Then I jumped on the sofa and got ready to play. I spent an hour downloading the apps and games that I wanted. I was one happy guy!

Niagara Falls Narrative

                   Niagara Falls Narrative
stepped out of the snug car which smelled of mouth-watering food and treats. As soon as my foot came out of the car, I felt a frigid wind run up the base of my leg. After about five minutes of standing outside, I could no longer sense my fingers, toes, nose, lips and ears. I was so cold, that even my insides were probably frozen like  frosty ice-cubes.
My sister motioned me over. She was all hyped-up about something. ”Come over here and see this!” she said in a raised voice. I trudged toward her, and in front of me, I observed a waterfall so breath-taking, followed by a colorful rainbow.
ething that someone would see in a cartoon, maybe even in their dreams. But it wasn't. It was as true as day. A real waterfall that wasn't in a cartoon or a dream. We took a lot of pictures of the amazing waterfall.
In a sudden feeling, I forgot all about the freezing temperature that made me feel like I was vacationing in Antarctica. The warmth that it gave me started in the center of my body and then spread like vines throughout the rest of my body. I felt goosebumps everywhere! I had never seen anything as exquisite as this sight, right in front of me, right now.

B-ball for the first time

B-ball for the first time

Tweet! That was the sound of the ref’s whistle. 5...4...3… Bedford’s ball. We were winning 24-22. Number 12 of Bedford zoomed up the court with the ball. They had one chance to win the game. They shot up a quick three pointer. 3… 2… 1… The game depended on this very shot. The ball rattled around the rim bing… bang… bong… If this shot missed we would remain undefeated. N-N-NO GOOD. We won and went completely ballistic! It all went down like this. I still remember the last two minutes like it was yesterday. We were losing 20-18. Bedford scored again to make the score 22-18. The pressure was on with just 1:50 to go. We had to score here, if not we were toast. I sprinted up the court with the ball. I zoomed the ball over to Colin and he exploded to the basket. He passed over to Aidan M. He shot the ball in the net and got fouled too. He missed the shot but Kyle got the ball and put it right back in to make the score 22-22! We pressed them on defense. PRESS BREAK! they called out. 5...4...3...2...1…  five second violation.
We were going crazy! I passed it to Aidan C. He drove to the basket and scored! 24-22! Bedford passed the ball in...10...9...8… Bedford’s number 12 bolted up the court as fast as if he were a bunny being chased by a coyote. He chucked up  a “Hail Mary” three pointer. Bedford players stared at the ball with wide open eyes hoping it would go in to clinch the game. It swirled around the rim of the hoop, for what seemed like the longest couple seconds of my life. I glanced over at the shooter. He had the look of victory in his eyes, but so did I! Apparently, luck was on our side as the ball hit the backboard and bounced out. The buzzer went off and we won!

First Time Meeting My Niece

                   First Time Meeting My Niece
                                                                                                    By: Anna P.

I don’t think this is going to go well. I’m going to see my baby niece and I’m really nervous. What if she doesn’t like me? What if she starts crying because of me? “Are we there yet?” my brother, Andy, asked while playing on the iPad. It took for ever in the car and I was getting hungry. My family was finally there.

They lived in an apartment at the very back of the building at the highest floor. Once I walked in their apartment, I could see my nieces Mom, Dad (they were all pretty young), Grandmother, and Grandfather,(on her Mom’s side) all asking things like “How was the plane ride?” or “What did you do back in America?”. Then suddenly, the Mother and Father told us to be more quiet because the baby was sleeping. My Mom said that we should all go look at the baby in her room especially when she’s sleeping.

Wow, she was really cute! I just wanted to hug and squeeze her real tight. Maybe she wasn’t so bad after all. But just maybe. We were there for about five minutes and her grandma said it was time for lunch. Good, because I was really getting starving. The food was also really good, way better than I expected--until the baby started crying. I don’t know if it was Andy yelling “No, nooo” because he lost on a game (on the iPad), or if my mom was being too dramatic talking to them. But her mom quickly went into her room and start hugging her and trying to make her to stop crying.

I always have the feeling whenever I hear a baby cry, I feel sorry for them, and then I feel like I’m going to cry. When I was done eating my delicious lunch, my Mom and Dad asked them if I could hold her because I have never held another baby except Andy.

I gave them a “Why did you say that?” look and then smiled at the other people. Her father told me how to hold a baby. Once I held her, I felt the warmth of her smile. Maybe she wasn’t so bad after all. Her grandma said I look like a mini mom. Maybe I liked babies all along, I just didn’t know it.

Something's in my House

Somethings In My House
 By, Anna O.

“AHHH!”, my Mom squealed. It was about seven years ago and my Dad and I were in my room picking out a bedtime story to read before bed. We almost fell out of my bed when we heard the squeal! “You wait here, I’m going to see why your mom just screamed. It might just be a spider or something”, my Dad told me. I felt the wind of the door slamming blow against my face. So I just kept waiting, in my room, with the door closed, in the dark, hearing creaks from bouncing on my bed non stop. I wonder what was going on out there!

All of a sudden, I heard more squealing, a door slam, and feet scampering down the stairs. Then I started hearing a weird flapping sound coming from my parents’ bedroom. I was really confused, but not scared. While I was in my room, my parents were talking downstairs. “What are we going to do?! There’s a bat in our house!”, my Mom shrieked. “Wait a second, where’s Anna?!”, she added nervously.

My Mom stampered up the stairs, tripping over her own feet. She slid across the hallway floor and threw my bedroom door open, knocking over everything behind the door. She ran to my bed, throwing me into her arms. She ran out my bedroom door, slamming the door behind us. It felt like the house shook. She ran down the hall, still with me in her arms. My legs were hitting every corner. I knew we were going to trip. The carpet in the hallway slid everywhere while we ran by. I tried asking my mom what was going on but she couldn’t hear my over all of her loud footsteps. She ran down the stairs, skipping two steps every step. Finally we reached the bottom.

I saw that my little brother was sleeping on the couch and my Dad was talking to someone on the phone. My Mom could tell that I was scared so she told me that there was a bat in our house but Batman was coming to capture it. While my family and I were waiting for “Batman” to come, we sat on the couch and watched TV. After about fifteen minutes, “Batman” came. He ran upstairs as fast as lightning with my Dad to capture the bat.

While they were upstairs, I heard screaming, flapping, loud banging, shrieking, and stomping. After all of that screaming and flapping, my Dad and “Batman”  came downstairs with the bat in a cage and a lot of bad scratches on their hands, but they were fine. “Thank you for coming here so late at night”, my Mom thanked. “No problem”, “Batman” replied. We opened the front door, opened the cage, and let the bat free. As “Batman” was headed out the front door, he told my parents and I something that made my mouth open so wide!

He said, “You got really lucky, that bat was about to have babies!”.

Niagara Falls

Neeva T.

Right at that moment, I had known they were lying to me, but I still pestered them about it. “Where are we going Dad? Mom, where are we going?”
“Oh nowhere special,” they would tell me, “now start packing and I will come over and help you.”
“Ugh…” I muttered.
Well, it turns out that we were going on a ten hour road trip to Niagara Falls!

We had an enormous breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was because my parents knew we were going to make it to Niagara Falls near midnight. I’m surprised I kept up and not feel sick, but I guess it was worth it because I didn’t feel famished during the ride. I was pretty much asleep most of the ride, so I don’t remember seeing exquisite sights. But I’m glad I got enough sleep and energy for the trip.

When I woke up, we were in a packed parking lot. When we got out of the car, it was hot but not enough to be scorching. We were all very thrilled! So was I, but I was aggravated at the same time because I was in a deep long sleep, until my sister woke me up and I was still tired. But soon enough I was fully awake. We went into a building where you had to pay for your parking spot and everything. As we headed out, we got these clear blue, almost raincoats, but in the style of a poncho, because it was so wet out there. We got out, and I saw one of the most beautiful and astonishing sights I could ever see!

There were all different colored lights everywhere! Yellow as blinding as the sun, pink as light as cotton candy, red as bright as red roses, green as sour limes, light blue just as the morning sky, and purple as a beautiful sunset. All the colors mixed were just as pretty. As the water fell heavily, the waterfall almost looked like a big, bright, and colorful puffy cloud. The lights at the Fall were so radiant and beautiful. The water splashing onto Niagara River, getting most people who were in the way, wet. I was getting jostled and nudged a lot to the point where I almost fell, but I wouldn’t blame them for trying to see this sight. The whole crowd was in awe, their eyes shimmering with the reflection of the bright lights. The Niagara Falls Light Show was on!

We had watched for an awfully long time, and it was already midnight! Our legs were sore from moving to different spots, trying get a good picture and an amazing view. We went back to the parking lot and carried our luggages into the hotel we were staying at. We checked in at the hotel. We were going to go back to the Falls in the morning, so we had a good night sleep and rest.

In the morning we had planned to go on the tour boat, “Maid of the Mist”. So we changed out of our pajamas and bolted downstairs to have breakfast at the hotel. Soon enough it was already time to go. We had the poncho-styled raincoat on again and we headed to the boat. Everyone was pushing each other trying to get on the boat. Once we got on the boat, we all put the hoods of our raincoats on our heads and tightened it because we were definitely getting wet! It was very crowded and there were lots of tourist, including us, who brought water-proof cameras. We got super close to the Falls itself, and got drenched! The waterfall was so beautiful, along with the nature. It was so cool how Goat Island separated the waterfall. We had so much fun on the “Maid of the Mist”.

Soon enough, it was lunch time and we went to the dining hall in the hotel to eat. After we finished, we headed back to our room and got our luggages. I basically lugged my luggage because it was too heavy for my tiny noodle arms at the time. My dad helped me though. We checked out and went to the parking lot. We placed our luggage inside our car and got inside. My Mom drove on the way back, since my Dad drove on the way here first. She put the key in the keyhole, turned the key right until it met the word “start”, pulled the gear stick to reverse and backed up the car, set the gear stick back to drive, and off we went.

We had made a couple of stops to get more water and to eat. That day was much hotter than the day when we arrived at Niagara Falls, so it was a struggle on the road. We were all exhausted yet there were ten hours left until we got home. My Sister and I ended up falling asleep, but my parents were awake since they had to take turns on driving. It was just all really tiring.

We finally got back home! We were all stuffed, tired, and our legs were sore. It was past midnight, and we were all worn out. All we did when we got in the house was sleep! We didn’t even bother to unpack, we just slept. But I hope we get to go Niagara Falls again! I’ll surely never forget my fun experience at Niagara Falls!

Virginia Beach

Sandy Paradise!
by Kyle C.

IMG_0120.JPGIMG_0121.JPGThe bright glare of sun was sizzling my back on the long, sandy beach. Luckily, I would not be hot much longer because there was an enormous wave heading right for me! I dove under the water right in the nick of time. The wave missed me by inches as it came crashing over me. My Dad rode in the wave, so it took me a little while to find him. He surprised me because he popped up a little closer than I expected him to.
He snatched my hand so I didn’t get hurt by the upcoming wave. I just floated over it because it was not ready to crash. I ran out shivering even though it was warmer than any other ocean I have ever been in! I grabbed my towel and dried myself off, yet I felt like I was being scrapped because I still had little bits of sand and salt stuck to me. I looked around, and I saw that I had the perfect opportunity to gather everyone up for a Kan Jam tournament.
I yelled to everyone that we will be having an intense tournament of Kan Jam. I love playing Kan Jam because it is a competitive game, and because one good throw in the slot and you win!Everyone came over, and luckily, we had sorted out the teams at the house before we came. First up was my Mom and I against my Dad and my brother, Kevin. After going over the rules, the game started. We won the first game, so we were now in the winners' bracket. The next game was my sister, Kayla, and her boyfriend Pat against my sister, Kelly, and her boyfriend Joe. My sister, Kayla’s, team won so we played against them in the championship. I had the final shot to win the game.
I picked up the frisbee off the steaming sand. I wrapped my fingers around the end of the frisbee and got a tight grasp on it. The pressure was on! I flung the frisbee towards the can. It flew and it caught wind… but it caught too much wind! It gradually
went higher. Too high! It scraped the top of the can. Not enough points to win, so we lost! Although we lost, we all still had a great day at the beach, and I bet there will be many more great ones to come!

Let go of me!” I thought to myself. I was in London because of something my Dad had to do at  work ( he travels a lot and this trip he took my family along ). It was like I was in prison because I wanted to get across the street where my Mom and Dad were putting my little brother into the car. I had to be with my Dads colleague, all the way across the street. So I pulled and pulled but she wouldn’t let me go, probably because she knew that I was going to run across the road without looking at both sides.

I kept my hopes up and  kept on trying to get out of her tight grip. All I wanted to do was get to my parents. After a century of pulling, I was free! I ran as fast as I could, ( which was  not very fast) but was blinded by a bright light beside me. and…”BAM.” I was hit by a car.

The ground felt cold and hard. My dad came running over to me, and guess what he saw… a red line was followed by my mouth… Don’t worry  it was part of the road. It was kinda hard hard to see since it was at night. Luckily my dad spotted a ambulance car and ran over to ask them if they could help me, and they said they could.

It was very fortunate that I wasn’t  hurt on my feet so I walked over to  ambulance car and they asked me where I was hurt. I told them that I was hurt just near the joint between my shoulder and my arm, but something strange happened- all the the pain vanished! So when I told them that, they just took my blood pressure and then went to a corner to talk to my Dad. A few minutes later I was out  of the ambulance car and got to go see my Mom, who was very worried about me. From now on I’m going to make sure I look on both sides before crossing the street.

The Target Rush

The Target Rush

blackfriday13.jpg”Wow, look at that line!” I said to my Dad.

After standing in line for 3 and ½  hours of complaining to my Dad and being bored, we finally came by the aisle that had the PlayStation 4 connected. I told my Dad to wait in line while I played FIFA 15 on the PlayStation. I rushed to the PlayStation before anyone has the chance to steal it from me. I grabbed the controller and started playing, trying not to think about the amount of time I had left to play.

People rushed to buy the games on their sons and daughters lists. I got jostled and pushed from every side! I lost my focus as I got bumped into, and the other team scores to tie up the virtual game to 2-2.
